On the way you can see works of art of the railway, such as bridges and the main attraction of this old line, the Mantiqueira Tunnel, which can be visited on foot (from Coronel Fulgencio station). The tunnel has 997m of extension,
Railroad The railroad originated from a concession made in 1875 by the Imperial Government to José Vieira Couto de Magalhães and to the Visconde de Mauá, with the denomination of Rio Verde Railroad, this being the last involvement of the Baron Of Mauá with a railroad project. Construction began on April 21, 1881, led by an English company called The Minas and Rio Railway.
The railway was inaugurated on June 14, 1884 and the inaugural trip was attended by Dom Pedro II and retinue (who had already visited the works in 1883). On the maiden voyage, Dom Pedro traveled all 170kms connecting Cruzeiro to Três Corações, and he was so pleased with the inaugural train that, when he arrived in Três Corações, honored the English engineer Henrique Turner, With a hug.
Later the English railway returned the concession to the federal government, where after several changes of administration the RMV (Mineira de Viação) appeared and finally, in 1991, already under RFFSA control, the railroad was closed.
Currently, of the original 170kms, only 20 are in operational condition, thanks to the work of the ABPF that keeps open to traffic stretches in Passa Quatro, where it operates the Trem da Serra and in São Lourenço, where the Water Train operates.
After a few minutes of travel the train enters the rural area of the municipality and arrives at the station Manacá and as background, we have the beautiful mountain of mantiqueira.
After the Manacá station, we begin the ascent of the Serra da Mantiqueira, where we can observe the beautiful natural flora of the place, native forests and rapids of the river Manacá.
